In 1835 . . .The United States public debt was $0 for the only time in history . . . The first assassination attempt against a United States President (Andrew Jackson) took place . . . The Great Fire of New York destroyed 800 buildings (including the New York Stock Exchange) AND Tthere was not much faith in US Currency which led to the founding of a private mint called Z. Bisbee Co. – which eventually became The Osborne Coinage Company – America’s Oldest Private Mint.
The company was established in the heart of downtown Cincinnati, OH and 177 years later, the organization’s headquarters is just a few miles from the original site (which is now Saks Fifth Avenue).

During the rich history of Osborne Coinage, there have been 44 Presidents, two World Wars, The Great Depression, The Industrial Revolution, the birth of the Internet and far too many inventions to name.
Through all these generations, The Osborne Coinage Company has not only been a strong organization, but holds numerous distinctions during this incredible historical journey, including:
- Minting the presidential campaign medals for Abraham Lincoln’s successful campaign (as well as for eight other presidential candidates).
- Manufacturing 5 billion food ration tokens during WWII, causing production to reach 80 million tokens/day.
- Developing a special script medium-of-exchange token for thousands of coal mines with a non-counterfeit guarantee.
- Minting of millions of doubloons for the Mardi Gras celebration in New Orleans.
- Making more transportation tokens than any other private mint (exceeding the 100 million tokens used by the New York subway system).
Today, in 2016, The Osborne Coinage Company holds the designation of America’s Oldest Private mint as the organization adapts and innovates with the changing market place.
